The Art Museum of
Odessa houses one of the largest collections of Russian and
Ukrainian masterpieces in the Ukraine.
The collections
of the Museum boast magnificent and artistically unique works of
great masters reflecting the development of national art from icon painting of the 15th - 18th centuries to contemporary
painting, graphic art, sculpture and decorative art.
The Museum was
inaugurated in 1899 on the initiative of the Odessa Society of
Fine Arts. The collection of the Odessa Drawing School and more
than 70 works of art from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts
established the foundation of the new museum.
The building of
the Museum is one of the most notable architectural monuments of
the Classicism which was popular during the early 19th century.
The exposition
occupies twenty-six halls and it is arranged in the historical and chronological succession following a monographic principal of each
artist presentation.
First halls of
exposition acquaint visitors with icon-painting which was one of
the prevailing trends in the art of Old Russia (the 10th - 17th centuries).
The department of
Russian art of 18th and 19th centuries represents remarkable works
of best masters of that epoch such as D.Levitskiy, V.Borovikovskiy, O.Kiprenskiy,
V.Tropinin.
Works by the masters of Russian and
Ukrainian realistic school of the 19th century - the early 20th
century comprise the great part of the Museum's collection. The
Russian art of that time is represented by pictures of I.Kramskoy, A.Savrasov,
I.Levitan, I.Shyshkin, A.Kuindzhi, I.Repin, V.Surikov and many others, which were known as
Wanderers.
Among the best exhibits of the Museum are works by an outstanding seascape
painter I.Aivazovskiy and his followers.
The great
Ukrainian poet and painter T.Shevtchenko is represented by a
number of etchings.
The department of
modern art displays pictorial life of Odessa from 20-s until
present days. Exposition contains best artistic works from
Ukraine and other regions of former USSR and it is continuously supplemented with new pieces of painting, sculpture
and drawing.
The Museum staff
members are engaged in various activities such as excursions,
lectures, aesthetic education of children, arrangement of various
expositions on the premises and traveling expositions for
country-side areas; they augment the collection and do the research work, compile and publish catalogues, booklets, albums
and organize meetings of artists with visitors.
