Russian writer famous for his war and Odessa stories. Considered as an innovator of the Soviet prose. Noted for achieving highly moving effects in brief stories. Wrote about Jewish life in his hometown, Odessa, mixing objectivity and tenderness with humor, cruelty, and elements of wild fantasy. Early war stories were based on Babel's experiences and observations while serving with Russian forces in Poland in the early 1920s. Author of collections "Konarmiya" ("Red Cavalry") and "Odesskiye rasskazy" ("Odessa Tales") as well as plays "Zakat" ("Sunset") and "Maria", which were staged by the Moscow Art Theatre.
