Ukrainian, NATO ships start Sea Breeze 2010 drills in Black Sea

Fifteen Ukrainian, U.S. and Turkish warships sailed out of Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odessa on Sunday to begin the active phase of the Sea Breeze 2010 exercises, the Ukrainian UNIAN news agency reported.

The military drills, focused on the planning and conduct of international anti-piracy operations, began in southern Ukraine on July 12 and will run until Friday.

The multinational headquarters is staffed by Ukrainian, U.S., Georgian and Moldovan officers and representatives of Azerbaijan, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Moldova, Poland, Sweden and Austria are also at.. [+]

Vladimir Mashkov receives special prize at Odessa Film Festival

Famous Russian actor Vladimir Mashkov has received a special prize of the First International Odessa Film Festival. The award was presented for his portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel David Gotsman in the TV series "Liquidation" by Russian director Sergei Ursulyak.

The actor’s work was assessed for its contribution to the cultural life of Odessa. "Of course, I will share this award with all the actors who starred with me in “Liquidation ", - said Mashkov. Gérard Depardieu will open First Odessa International Film Festival

Sea Breeze 2010 kicks off in Odessa

Sea Breeze 2010 officially kicked-off with an opening ceremony and combined press conference with senior Ukrainian and U.S. naval leadership at the Ukranian Southern Operational Command, July 12.

Sea Breeze is an invitational combined and joint maritime exercise in the Black Sea with the goals of enhancing Black Sea nation maritime security capabilities and improving Black Sea theater security cooperation strategies.

Fourth Venezuelan oil tanker to arrive at Odessa port 17 July

The next tanker with 76,000 tonnes of Venezuelan oil for Belarus is expected at the port of Odessa on 17 July, according to the port dispatching office.

This is the fourth tanker delivering oil from Venezuela to the Republic of Belarus via Ukraine.

The third tanker is still in a shipment terminal of the Odessa trading seaport discharging 30,000 more tonnes of oil into the railway tanks. Over 35,000 tonnes of oil has already been sent to the Mozyr Oil Refinery.

Custom seizes record $60 million in cocaine

Customs officials say they've seized $60 million (Euro 47.5 million) worth of cocaine in the Sea Port of Odessa, in the country's biggest cocaine bust ever.

A statement late Monday said 580 kilograms were hidden in a cargo of scrap metal on a boat from Bolivia. The drugs were stashed between thick pipes to escape X-ray detection, the statement said.

Viktor Pogozhiy, head of Odessa's anti-smuggling customs unit, said on TV that imports of scrap metal arouse suspicion in Ukraine, a big metals producer. There was information on arrests.

Stolen Caravaggio recovered in Germany

The stolen work of 17th century Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio belonging to a Ukrainian museum was recovered by police in Berlin, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.

The painting, called the "Taking of Christ," or the "Kiss of Judas," was stolen in July 2008 from the Museum of Western and Eastern Arts in Ukraine’s southern city of Odessa.

Second shipment of Venezuelan oil for Belarus unloaded at Odessa seaport

The discharge of a shipment of 80,147 tons of Venezuelan oil for Belarus was completed at Ukraine’s Odessa seaport at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday, a seaport traffic control officer told BelaPAN.

The light sweet Santa Barbara crude was delivered to the port on June 19 by the Minerva Sophia tanker.

On June 24, the oil will start being loaded into tank cars for delivery to Belarus’ Mazyr oil refinery by rail, the source said.

Kiev to buy gas from Azerbaijan, build gas terminal in Odessa

Ukraine plans to purchase up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan, Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Boyko said after negotiations with Azerbaijan which is building a liquified gas terminal with Romania and Bulgaria in Kulevi, Georgia, RBK-reports. "We are counting on Ukraine buying 5 billion cubic meters of gas in the first stage and another five in the second, for a total of 10 billion cubic meters of gas", he said. Boyko said building its own liquified gas loading terminal would cost Ukraine $1 billion, but he added building one in Odessa would give Kiev an alternative.. [+]

Belarus, Venezuela to set up joint company selling oil products via Odessa

A joint Belarusian-Venezuelan company selling products of oil refinement will be set up by the end of June 2010.

At the moment the company is undergoing registration. Belarus is supposed to hold 25% of the company’s shares, Venezuela – 75%.

The Venezuelan oil is delivered to Belarus under the customs territory regime. It means that 100% of products of oil refinement will go for export. A new Jewish cultural center was dedicated in Odessa

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Odessa Jewish community on Monday formally dedicated the Beit Grand Jewish Cultural Center.

The center was renovated and expanded with funds from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and philanthropists Nancy and Stephen Grand.

Beit Grand is home to the city's Hesed Shaarey Tzion Welfare organization and its Jewish Family Services program, as well as Hillel and the Odessa Regional Association of Ghetto and Concentration Camp Survivors.
